South Korea, known as the Republic of Korea, is the 10th most economically prosperous nation in the world, based on nominal GDP. Seoul, South Korea’s capital city, is home to half of the country’s 51 million people, making Seoul one of the largest – and densest – metropolitan areas globally. A mountainous country, only 30% of its total land area of 100,032 square kilometers is lowlands. There are over 3,000 small islands off the coast of South Korea, many of which are uninhabited. It is one of the world’s most ethnically homogenous societies as 96% of the population consists of ethnic Koreans and many immigrants also tend to be of Korean origin. Many of the top global brands are Korean; Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Kia. In recent years, South Korea’s music known as K-Pop and its tv dramas have become a worldwide phenomenon, ushering it what is being referred to as ‘The Korean Wave’.
